FRIENDS OF THE WOODS

FRIENDS OF THE WOODS SEEKS VOLUNTEERS

Friends of the Woods needs help at the Fall Trail Maintenance Day in the
Highland Woods Environmental Education Reserve on Saturday afternoon, September 20.
We will meet at the
Sylvania Place gate at 12:00 Noon.  Work will continue through the
afternoon till about
3:00 p.m., so late arrivals are also welcome.

Volunteers will tackle a variety of projects, including trail maintenance (pruning,
blazing), control of invasive alien plants, erosion control and litter cleanup.  Gloves and bags
will be provided.  Volunteers are asked to bring any appropriate tools they can.  These include
shovels, rakes, hoes, pruners or loppers, and wheelbarrows or carts,

Friends of the Woods holds two Trail Maintenance Days a year.  These keep the trails safe
and enjoyable for the science classes, scout troops and the public that use the nature reserve
year-round.  They also offer an opportunity to learn more about the Woods, and to meet other
people who like to be around trees and wildlife.  The April event was rained out, as were many
of FOW’s planned nature walks, in this year’s wet, cool spring.  Thus, the Woods need their
fall grooming more than usual.
