Minority Message

In the past year much has been said as to the way business was conducted by the Mayor and 2008 Borough Council. Most people seemed, for whatever reason, to enjoy the bickering and fighting that went on. As we are all aware, with change comes opposition.

What wasn't expected, however, was the constant opposition of every idea that was brought forward. The repaving and opening of Metuchen Edythe curb restoration program, the revitalizing of Cotton Street Park and to one of the Democrats own ideas, Democracy Day. All at little or no expense to the taxpayers. Some things just didn't make sense to me until it became apparent that if something was a good, productive idea for the Borough, it would be met with a cold reception. Why, would an elected official disagree with projects that would benefit everyone? I even remember that the speed humps program was looked at as a foolish idea and something that wouldn't work. That program which is aptly named Safe Streets/Safe Kids has been such a huge success that every week someone from a different neighborhood comes forward and requests that we look into it for their neighborhood as well.

The Borough finances have also been a topic of discussion. With the elimination of some administrative positions and the consolidation of others, the budget last year was slashed by over $700,000 and borrowing down by $1.4 million. Along with revamping our approach to tax appeals, I firmly believe the Borough is moving in the right direction.

Needless to say our Mayor Charles Butrico and the 2009 Borough Council are going to be met with many challenges. We all should look forward to meeting these challenges head on. Now in the minority, Councilman McConville and I will embrace any constructive, positive idea that is right for the Borough. I’ve stated before that we, as elected officials, should act like public servants and not party servants.

I speak for Councilman McConville and myself when I say we look forward to doing our part to help create unity among this council and put party loyalties aside for the betterment of the Borough of South Plainfield.
