Community Oriented Policing

The concepts behind community policing is that police officers and private citizens work together and in creative ways to help solve contemporary community problems related to crime, fear of crime, social and physical disorder and neighborhood decay.

Officers assigned to Community Policing work with the community to address their concerns. They provide various programs that require community input, and are assigned cases that can best be solved by using community policing methods.

Residential Home Security Surveys

There is no cost for the survey, where an Officer meets with you at your residence and which provides you with recommendations to make your home less of a target for crime.  Contact the Community policing unit at (908) 226-7716 or send an e-mail requesting a Home Security Survey.

 DARE

The COPS unit has Officers that provide DARE classes in all our schools. The DARE program provides:

D.A.R.E. "humanizes" the police: that is, young people can begin to relate to officers as people, rather than in terms of uniforms or parts of an institution.
D.A.R.E. reduces peer pressure and balances values for all types of responsible behavior.
D.A.R.E. opens lines of communication between the school district and police to deal with a wide range of issues, such as violence in the schools, drug abuse, and any other problem about which there is mutual concern.
D.A.R.E. shows the police in a different light for many adults within the community: parents, teachers, school staff, administrators, and school board members.
D.A.R.E. training is an instrument of socialization that introduces officers to a philosophy that measures success by community acceptance and support rather than by the numbers of crimes and arrests.
Exposure to life in the public schools can broaden officers' perspectives on, and understanding of, community concerns.
D.A.R.E. fosters the close and prolonged contact with the community that is fundamental to community policing.

Public Speakers                        McGruff The Crime Dog

The Community Policing unit provides Officers to speak at meetings, Neighborhood Watch Programs, and/or scheduled events. These officers can speak on a wide range of Crime Prevention and/or Community Policing subjects. We also can provide Officers and McGRUFF® (pictured above) for fingerprinting of children.
