SOUTH PLAINFIELD RESIDENTS CLEAN UP AT FALL VOLUNTEER LITTER PICKUP EVENT
About twenty children and adults came out on Saturday, September 29 to clear litter from South Clinton Avenue and surrounding roadsides. Representatives of the High School Wrestling Team, the South Plainfield Green Team, and Boy Scout Troop 309 joined with other families to fill nearly twenty bags with plastic and paper litter, bottles, cans and junk. Covering over two road miles, they collected more than 700 pounds of trash.
For about two hours, volunteers in bright yellow reflective vests worked in the early fall sunshine along the road shoulders, behind orange cones set up to warn traffic of the litter crews ahead. Fortunately, traffic in this industrial area is lighter than usual on a Saturday morning.
The businesses that line South Clinton Avenue are generally very good about property maintenance and keeping their frontages clean. Several have earned the Clean Communities Advisory Board’s Glitter Award. Even in this well-kept area, our volunteers collected hundreds of pounds of litter and trash. Litter control requires ongoing efforts, and, like housework, is never done. The CCAB is grateful to the volunteers who help keep our shared home an enjoyable, healthful place to live and work.
